Punk, prints and ponchos: who won the fashion match at Wimbledon?

In 2013, Roger Federer wore orange-soled Nikes on Centre Court and ruined Wimbledon for everyone – in 2014, the committee implemented an “almost entirely white” accessory rule on court. Still life finds a way, with players on court and attendees in the Wimbledon frow exploiting stylistic loopholes in ever more ingenious ways.

Moderated punk

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the Russian No 7 seed, has a tattoo that reads “Pain doesn’t kill me, I kill the pain”, another that says “Only God is our judge” and a picture of a tiger on her belly. Yesterday, she capped this with a single safety-pin earring. Punkish semaphore, homage to Ivanka Trump or nod to autumn/winter 2016 Balenciaga and Sonia Rykiel? Given that the piercing is gold, possibly by Ileana Makri and, if so, cost $200 (£155), our money is on the latter.

Visors are the new baseball caps

Worn by Jeremy Corbyn in a train toilet and seen in Versace’s spring/summer 2017 collection, it feels premature to say caps are on the wane, but here we are: this year, visors were ahead, at least for women. See fans Johanna Konta, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Venus Williams, whose hat barely contained her lavish Versaillian up-do.

Djokovic’s athleisure

This year, the Serb titan switched from Uniqlo to Lacoste, both decent sponsors, and both more athleisure than sportswear. The sight of Novak in a crisp white Lacoste polo certainly took the edge off his complaints about a hole in the courtand the decision to delay his match.

Giant security passes

Excellent to see attendees making heightened security work for them – visible tags on lanyards are now essential. Their giant lobster clips are also in fashion, from Fendi to H&M to Anna Wintour, whose bejewelled print dress offset the green strap.

Chanel-over

Screw the granular scrutiny over her appearance – last night, 2013 winner Marion Bartoli wore a Chanel necklace while punditing, and recycled it again on This Morning. Bartoli: practically trolling her critics with her fruity accessorising.

Niche uniforms

Commentator David Law declared the Chelsea Pensioners “the best dressed people at Wimbledon” owing to their red and black uniform. But they have nothing on umpire Kader Nouni’s pairing of a contrast-collar shirt with sunglasses, which screamed off-duty banker on a boat. It even appeared to inspire Ian McKellen and Cliff Richard’s Jermyn Street check. Works for us, lads.

Print wars

Prints are an ever-present sight on the frow, and a surefire way of getting spotted by the cameras. So who won at Wimbledon – Carole Middleton in a restrained blue print dress? Maggie Smith in polka dots? Miroslava Federer in jumbo green leaves? Or Anna Wintour in her modernish shift dress with bejewelled collar? Wintour, obviously. Best hair, too.

Gorpcore

AKA hiking chic. Gorpcore was tipped to be the trend of the year, but has yet to take off because the weather has been decent. Except for yesterday, when the heavens opened, as did queuers’ umbrellas, bright ponchos and tents. Finally, something predictable happened at Wimbledon.

Melania Trump continues fashion tour de force at Eiffel Tower dinner

After earning praise for her elegance and knowledge of French style, Melania Trump continued her fashion tour de force in a custom Hervé Pierre dress for dinner at the Eiffel Tower.

The first lady joined her French counterpart, Brigitte Macron, President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron for a cozy meal at the Jules Verne Restaurant in the Parisian landmark Thursday, showing her earlier outfit was not a one-off.

The slim-fit, knee-length dress tastefully highlighted the national colors for the two countries  — a fitting salute to France on the eve of Bastille Day, a national holiday akin to the 4th of July. And its made it all the more diplomatic when taking into account Pierre’s French heritage and recently-earned American citizenship.

The designer and stylist behind her inaugural gown also picked out her red Dior suit from earlier in the day, a lovely nod to the 70th anniversary of the famous fashion house.

Brigitte Macron, for her part, wore another French designer, in the form of a Louis Vuitton mini-dress.

Virtual Reality Seeks Momentum at CES Gadget Gala

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Virtual Reality was the centre of focus at last year’s CES
  • CES 2017 saw a revival of VR business
  • This time around there was a focus on what users will hold in hands

Virtual reality sought its stride Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show, where despite being a hot topic there was little sign it is racing into mainstream culture.

Show floor space devoted to virtual reality abounded with companies diving into the market with headsets, content, or tools for better creating or delivering immersive experiences.Virtual Reality Seeks Momentum at CES Gadget Gala

Last year at CES, virtual reality was an eye-grabbing sensation. This time around there was a focus on what it is going to take to get it into the hands of the masses.

Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the Consumer Technology Association behind the annual show, was confident that sales of mixed reality gear would grow, and the range of uses expand far beyond video games.

The goal is to help developers reach audiences and make money, ideally inspiring the creation of more VR content, according to HTC executives.

HTC also planned to bring VR to the masses in arcades in shopping malls, downtowns or other public locations.

The company envisioned thousands of Viveport Arcades in operation by the end of this year.

Sony Corporation chief executive Kazuo Hirai revealed at CES that the Japanese consumer electronics company had sold more than 53.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles, which can power it virtual reality head gear.

He said that Sony aimed to continue the console momentum with more services and content, including VR games.

Sony Pictures was among more than two dozen companies that used CES to announce the creation of a Virtual Reality Industry Forum.

The Forum said its goal is to “further the widespread availability of high-quality audiovisual VR experiences.”

The group wants standards and formats that allow rich VR content to be equally accessible from the array of devices, avoiding “fragmentation” that has plagued audio-visual media in the past, according to a release.

“We believe this is crucial for the market to take off,” Sky broadcast strategy chief engineer Chris Johns said in the release.

“We all expect that 2017 will be the year when intense consumer interest in VR spurs a quantum leap in the user experience.”

CES featured the largest collection of VR technology ever at a trade show, according to Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

“There is a bit of the cart being before the horse,” Blau said. “A lot of people have learned about it, but people aren’t really buying it.”

He described the VR scene at CES as the first incarnation of an ecosystem of devices, applications and services in what was a big step for the technology.

“There is nothing like putting it on and experiencing it,” Blau said of VR.

“The disappointing part is that it is quite expensive. VR will be held back a bit until quality goes up and price goes down.”

As Slickdeals points out, if you opt for in-store pickup, the retailer will drop another $59.38 off the sale price of $355. That’s a final cost of about $296.

The Ryzen 7 1700X has a 3.4GHz clock speed with a max boost of 3.8GHz, and it features eight cores, 16 threads, and a TDP of 95W. It doesn’t come with a fan, though, so you’ll have to pick-up your own CPU cooler. We usually recommend the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, since it’s cheap and effective.

 ryzen box 1 of 1

Not a whole lot has changed with the Ryzen 7 series since we looked at it last. They’re fantastic for tasks such as productivity and content creation, but the chips aren’t quite as fast as Intel’s Kaby Lake chips in gaming. Still, they’re fine processors nonetheless, and getting even better with updates.
