A Titanic moment: how Celine Dion became the fashion icon 2017 needs

Céline Dion: Canadian, excessively enthusiastic, big warbling voice. This much we know. But are you aware that the voice of the 90s has latterly become the poster girl for avant-garde fashion label Vetements?

Riding high after her first appearance at the Met Gala this year, to which she wore a deconstructed Versace gown with a higher-than-thigh-high slit, this week Dion has been fraternising with Anna Wintour on the frows in Paris, given the Giambattista Valli’s haute couture show a standing ovation and been photographed naked for US Vogue’s Instagram account.

Close watchers of Dion’s career would not be surprised to discover that she likes fashion. For the past five years, she has been almost exclusively wearing couture to perform in Las Vegas, by the likes of Armani Privé, Schiaparelli and Versace. But it wasn’t until last year that her more surprising, leftfield fashion credentials crystallised.

First, she was spotted in a leather trench coat made by Off-White, the in-the-know brand run by Kanye West collaborator Virgil Abloh. Next, she was snapped in a neon yellow dress made by Balenciaga, which was very meaningful because the house had recently hired an ice-cool creative director. By Vogue’s estimation, Dion was “the first celebrity to wear any new Balenciaga piece under Demna Gvasalia’s creative direction”. Adopting the Balenciaga look – a so-cool-it-hurts penchant for the ugly-on-purpose – is an unexpected twist for a celebrity best known for belting out power ballads.

Soon after that, things got meta. Vetements created a cult, merch-style hoodie, emblazoned with a picture of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. And in a seminal moment of self-reference last summer, Dion wore it on the streets of Paris, showing she had the chops to not only be a fashion icon, but one who could rise above the parapet and have a laugh at the same time.

All of this is evidence of her new status as everything the fashion industry never knew it wanted. A message that was firmly underlined during the haute couture shows this week, when Dion’s unbridled zeal for frocks in the front row earned her the vital key for anyone wanting to reach iconic status in 2017: a hashtag. Specifically: #celinetakescouture.

A lot of people are putting this sartorial renaissance down to Dion’s stylist of the last year, Law Roach, who calls himself an “image architect” – look to the bulbous, domed sleeves of Dion’s gown at the Billboard music awards and you can see why that’s a fitting description. But for those who have been backing Dion since her It’s All Coming Back to Me days, it’s obvious she has always had a knack for head-scratching fashion – her backwards tuxedo look on the 1999 Oscars red carpet is one of the key reasons that year has gone down in history as such a big one.

Now, even Drake, the meme king himself, has said he is thinking about getting a tattoo of Dion. Clearly, there is something ironic in the cool kids’ adoration of the queen of thumbs-up enthusiasm and middle-of-the-road music. But with her whoops and beaming smiles and giddy exuberance in the face of what can – at times – be a very po-faced industry, she might be the fashion icon 2017 so badly needs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • New products at CES 2017 dominated the news this week
  • Nokia 6 launch on Sunday stole CES’ thunder a little bit
  • Vodafone now has a Rs. 499 unlimited calling postpaid plan

Predictably, CES 2017 dominated tech news this week with a range of exciting launches and demos, but just as we were putting the finishing touches to this piece, another launch grabbed the headlines. HMD Global, the new custodians of the Nokia brand, announced the launch of Nokia 6, a phone that runs Android 7.0 out of the box.

The Nokia 6 has a 5.5-inch full-HD display wrapped in 2.5D Gorilla Glass. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC alongside 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Nokia 6 is a dual SIM smartphone that is backed by a 3000mAh non-removable battery. See full specifications of the Nokia 6, which will unfortunately be a China-exclusive smartphone. HMD Global confirmed more Nokia Android phones are coming soon.

Before we get to all the CES launches from this week, let’s take a look at some important stories from closer home. Vodafone is taking the battle to Reliance Jio and Airtel with the launch of a new postpaid plan that offers unlimited calling, and 3GB of 4G data each month. The revamped Vodafone Red postpaid plans come soon after Airtel started offering 3GB of free mobile data per month to prepaid and postpaid customers switching to its 4G network.

Friday saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy J1 (4G) in India – the same phone was launched in Russia in March last year, after quietly making its way to Dubai in January. In both those markets, it was sold as the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016). This is an entry level phone from Samsung, priced at Rs. 6,890.

From CES, one of the highlights was the launch of the Asus ZenFone AR, the first smartphone with 8GB of RAM. It also come with support for Google’s Tango augmented reality programme and DayDream virtual reality software. Asus ZenFone AR, like the other Tango device – the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro – is designed around machine vision with a camera and sensor setup that provides motion tracking, depth perception, and area learning.

In addition to the ZenFone AR, Also also unveiled the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom camera smartphone with 5000mAh battery at the event. The phone has dual rear cameras and offers 2.3x optical zoom.

Samsung used CES to showcase the new A (2017) smartphones launched earlier this week. The Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017) sport “enhanced” cameras compared to their predecessors, optimised for low-light conditions.

Later, pricing of the two of the new Samsung phones came to light as well.Nokia 6, Asus ZenFone AR and Other CES 2017 Launches, Vodafone's Rs. 499 Plan, More News This Week

All the Xiaomi CES 2017 devices will be available later this year in China. Slimmer than an iPhone 7, the Mi TV 4 is the company’s thinnest TV to date.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX was unveiled as a limited edition concept smartphone, made in collaboration with French designer Philippe Stark, in October last year, and it will go on sale later this year.

Chipmaker Qualcomm finally took the wraps off its Snapdragon 835 SoC. Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 packs an Adreno 540 GPU, and is 30 percent smaller than the Snapdragon 820. The first 10nm chip by Qualcomm comes with longer battery life and will enable thinner designs.

Nvidia launched a new version of its Shield Android TV, called just Shield, at CES 2017. It comes with Google Assistant integration and supports 4K HDR. The new Nvidia Shield will cost $199 (roughly Rs. 13,200) but the company has not announced the availability of the device yet. We saw the launch of the Xolo Era 2X – the 2GB RAM variant has been priced at Rs. 6,666 while the 3GB RAM variant has been priced at Rs. 7,499. WHAT PC GAME ANNOUNCEMENT FROM E3 2017 HAS YOU HYPED?

As we round the corner on our way out of another E3, it’s worth taking a look back and seeing what really stuck with us throughout the gigantic, announcement-filled gaming conference. Computers tend to take a back seat to consoles in the summer, but that doesn’t stop some big names from leaking through — here are some of our favorites, in no particular order.

At the top of the list, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition snuck in at the end of PC Gaming Show. The remastered, re-engineered version brings updated graphics, better resolution scaling, and of course heavy doses of nostalgia. The updated version will make its appearance in the later part of 2017.

Next up, Bungie’s latest franchise is finally making the leap from console to computer with Destiny 2, and while PC gamers will have to wait a few weeks to actually play, it promises unlocked framerates, 21:9 and 4K support, and full keyboard and mouse integration. This MMOFPS looks gorgeous as ever, with a distinct art style and engaging social features to keep players talking and working together.weekly computing poll e3 2017 destiny 2 news screen 3

Although you may not have heard of it until E3, Lone Echo is poised to strike at the heart of virtual reality with a story-fueled, zero gravity adventure on a futuristic space station. Its multiplayer component, Echo Arena, pits real players against each other in a high-flying, full-contact version of Ultimate Frisbee. Intel announced that the game would be free for all Oculus Rift users to claim for a limited time after its July 22nd release date.

Finally, a unique Rogue-lite adventure from Devolver Digital makes our list for a unique take on the genre. The protagonist of Sword of Ditto attempts to cure the land of an evil force, but should they die, the world will collapse into darkness, and the player’s reincarnated spirit will have to try all over again. It’s always nice to see an indie game shine among titles with much bigger budgets.

What PC title are you most excited for that was announced at E3 2017? Let us know in the poll above, or respond on Twitter and Facebook to let us know if something else caught your eye.
